News for OCTOBER 2010

We have recently finished classes for the school year here at LAVOSI.  We had a great year in 2010!   We started the school year in January with high hopes and just two elementary level students.   News of our program and the opportunities we offer the deaf at LAVOSI spread throughout the community and we finished the year with fourteen students; ten elementary students and four pre-elementary students!

On the 22nd of October we had the closing ceremony at LAVOSI.  The children shared songs and dances with friends and family.   Seeing the children Interpret a song in sign language is like watching a beautiful dance!  Later everyone joined in to sing "Imagine" by John Lennon in the Guatemalan Sign Language.  It was the perfect ending to a fantastic year!

We will move to our new location in Jocotenango (just minutes by bus from Antigua) in early January.  We have already set up an office in our new location in order to enroll students for the coming school year.

Finally, thanks to the Forix Foundation we will have the funds to hire two teachers for the 2011 school year.  Thank you Ellen and all the fine folks at Forix for you support and faith in LAVOSI!

News from JUNE 2010

In June we had the great pleasure and good fortune to have Monsignor Joseph Catrambone visit LAVOSI.  It is always good to have the Monsignor with us as he always brings good cheer and goodies for the children and staff.  This time he also brought Dr. Obed Luna, his wife Natasha and his niece Sarahi from El Salvador in order to put on a free medical clinic for our students, their families and the community.  What a blessing it is to be able to offer this service to so many in the deaf community and the community at large that do not have access to medical care!  Dr. Luna, Natasha and Sarahi spent two full days at LAVOSI and put in many hours organizing and implementing this event.

And we keep growing!  We are very happy to have three new students from the pueblo Santa María de Jesús.  They were attending the New Life School there, but after the director learned of our school for the deaf, she requested that we visit her school in order to meet with her three deaf students and their parents.  We had a very good meeting with the parents. Now Wendy, her sister Norma, and Limny are part of the LAVOSI family!

Spreading the word about LAVOSI. On the 15th the staff and students of LAVOSI gave a presentation at the Rainbow Cafe in Antigua.  For those of you that have been to Antigua, you may recall this bookstore/restaurant on South 7th Avenue.  Every Tuesday night the Rainbow cafe allows NGO´s to give a talk about their project.  It is a way to raise awareness and funds.  After showing slides and video about LAVOSI, the children signed two songs.  They did a wonderful job and LAVOSI was fortunate to raise almost $150.

So, as you can see, June was a very good one for LAVOSI and we look for even better things to come in the months to come!
